Food Industry Ally Challenges PETA Campaign

February 12, 2001

Anti-milk statement further undermines PETA’s credibility on a host of issues

The National Dairy Council, a food-industry- ally of the National Restaurant Association (NRA), recently issued a statement about the latest tactics being used by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Specifically, PETA is using cartoon characters to discourage milk drinking among young children and teenagers.

The National Dairy Council’s statement challenges PETA’s effort, calling it an “irresponsible campaign” that “could have serious health implications.” The statement, which was sent to the media, draws to reporters’ attention facts that may call into question PETA’s credibili ty on a host of issues, including PETA’s campaign against restaurants.

The NRA will continue to pursue strategies to represent the industry on this issue, as well as to work with individual companies upon request. Please do not hesitate to contact the NRA by phone at 800-424-5156 with questions
